Hundreds of ghost teachers, dozens of schools closed in North Waziristan

Out of 1048 female teachers posted in girls’ schools, 491 are not present at all, 251 female teachers are ghost

Biometric attendance is not possible due to absence of electricity in the area

North Waziristan schools are in a deplorable state. School buildings are in ruins, and there is a severe shortage of teachers and staff, reported a daily Pakistani newspaper ‘Nai Baat’.

On teaching side, hundreds of ghost teachers and dozens of closed schools have been revealed in North Waziristan. There are 949 government schools for students in North Waziristan, of which 462 are boys, of which 379 are primary, 56 are middle and 37 are high schools. Similarly, a total of 487 girls’ schools are in government records in North Waziristan.

According to District Education Officer, Mohib Dawar, 14 boys’ schools are completely closed and awaiting the return of IDPs, while non-functional schools are in addition. In the last 12 months, salaries of absent male teachers have been deducted up to Rs 15 million across the district. Eight teachers have been forcefully retired and show cause notices to 300 teachers for prolonged absence has been issued.

According to the official report, out of 1048 female teachers posted in girls’ schools in North Waziristan, 491 are not present at all while 251 are ghost teachers. Salaries of 136 women teachers have been cut by up to Rs 10 million for prolonged absenteeism. Ghost women teachers have the highest number of 170 primary school teachers, out of which 41 have moved out of the district with NOCs.

Most schools have been deserted and many have turned into private guesthouses known as Hujraz in North Waziristan. Due to absence of electricity in the area, biometric attendance of teachers is also not possible.
